Assessment Objective

• The report helps you grasp the fundamental concept of network design and acquire the knowledge on the techniques required for developing both logical and physical network designs.

• The simulation of a LAN using Packet Tracer enables you to understand the network architecture and gain practical skills to set up a LAN successfully.

• The presentation enables presentation, oral communication and team skills to be exercised as well as providing an opportunity to research a specific topic.

• Learning Outcomes Assessed:

  • ✔ K4. Describe the technologies and architecture of LANs, Wireless LANs and WANs.
  • ✔ K5. Identify the principles of LAN design.
  • ✔ A1.Analyse and design LAN architecture for organisational requirements.
  • ✔ S1- Analyse data communication and networking technologies in today's Internet.

Network Design Case

Hospitality Hotel is a luxury hotel whose guests are mostly business travellers. In Australia, the Hospitality Hotel has three hotels located in Melbourne, Adelaide, and Sydney. Melbourne hotel has two buildings. Building one is a three-storied building and has 30 guest rooms while building two comprises 12 conference rooms. To improve its quality of service, it has decided to install network connections in each of its 30 guest rooms and 12 conference meeting rooms. You are required to design a network (LAN) for the Melbourne hotel (enterprise campus). The Melbourne hotel will connect the two other hotels. Therefore, you need to consider the WAN access in the LAN design for the Melbourne hotel.

The new network will house a data centre, an e-commerce edge, and six printers. Four printers will be installed in the different rooms of building one, while the other two printers are to be installed in building two. A traveller is allowed to have a printing service with any printers through the new network. Travellers will bring their own mobile devices (e.g., laptops, smartphones, tablets) to work. Travellers will use them to access required information such as their work email, required documents, and the Internet through wireless communication facilities (Wi-Fi access points).

You will also require making some assumptions, so be sure to document your assumptions and explain why you have designed the network in this way.

Requirements

There are three parts of the requirements for this assignment – a) Report, b) simulation and c) presentation. Hand drawn layouts for both logical and physical designs are fine. However, if you like, you could use ConceptDraw (https://conceptdraw.en.softonic.com/) or SmartDraw (www.smartdraw.com) or any other network design software to draw the layout of logical and physical network designs.

a) Report [50 marks]

The report should be no more than 10 pages and needs to consider the following design tasks:

Design Tasks:

  • T1. Using the building-block network design process, develop a logical design of the new network for the Melbourne hotel enterprise campus that considers the seven network architecture components. Remember to consider the expected growth of the hotel. For the logical design, you need to consider the following items: [15 marks]
  • 1. Network architecture components
  • 2. Application systems
  • 3. Network users
  • 4. Categorizing network needs
  • 5. Deliverables
  • T2. Design the physical design of the network based on the logical design completed in Task T1. Note, you do not need to develop an alternative design. For the physical design, you need to consider the following items: [20 marks]
  • 1. Designing client and servers
  • 2. Designing circuits
  • 3. Network design tools
  • 4. Deliverables
  • T3. Briefly describe how you will minimise the interference from Wi-Fi access points (APs) on different floors. [10 marks]
  • T4. You will make some assumptions; therefore, document your assumptions and explain why you have designed the network in this way. [5 marks]

b) Simulation [20 marks]

For only the Melbourne hotel (enterprise campus), using the Packet Tracer, test and simulate the LAN you will develop for this assignment. For the simulation, you will consider two wired client computers and two wireless client computers for each of the two buildings of Melbourne hotel. Note that for the simulation, you do not need to consider the data centre, printers, e-commerce edge and WAN connected to two other hotels in Adelaide and Sydney. However, you need to use at least one router in the simulation. You will just consider the essential parts of the enterprise campus LAN so that you can test that a wired or wireless client computer of one building can communicate with a client computer of the other building. Submit your Packet Tracer file named “Enterprise-LAN_Your-Student-ID.pkt” to enable the marker to test your simulated model works correctly without showing any errors. [20 marks]

c) Presentation [3O marks]

Produce a presentation consisting of eight PowerPoint slides based on your report, simulated results/screenshots, and the relevant assessment criteria. Note that it is required to provide reflective thinking or justification about the design with appropriate evidence in the presentation. The presentation time is 10 minutes. The presentation will be given in Week 12's timetabled tutorial.

Online students can provide the presentations through either an appropriate online video conferencing technique (e.g., Teams) or adding voice-over to their PowerPoint presentation slides. If you would like to present via Teams, please contact your relevant lecturer or tutor.

Supporting Materials

Please look at Weeks 3-8 study materials, including lecture notes, tutorial problems and their solutions, online materials, and relevant sections of the prescribed text. You are also encouraged to use Internet resources. Please see the assessment criteria carefully.

Submission

Submit three files – (i) your assignment report in either Microsoft Word or PDF format, (ii) presentation slides and (iii) Packet Tracer (Enterprise-LAN_Your-Student-ID.pkt) file. Please create a zip file, namely Assignment2.zip using these three files, and submit it via Moodle.
